Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, announced on Sunday in a post on X that he has approved a new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, valued at 128 billion dirhams ($34.85 billion).
He went on to claim that all operations at Dubai airport would be moved to Al Maktoum in the upcoming years, making it the largest airport in the world with a capacity of up to 260 million passengers and five times larger than Dubai International Airport.
He added that there will be five runways and 400 terminal gates at the Al Maktoum airport.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, chairman of Dubai state-owned airline Emirates, announced that the airport will serve as the new home of the firm’s flagship carrier, Emirates, as well as its sister low-cost airline Flydubai and all other airline partners linking the world to and from Dubai.
The move “further solidifies Dubai’s position as a leading aviation hub on the world stage,” the CEO of Dubai Airports, Paul Griffiths, was quoted as saying by the Dubai Media Office.
This size airport will facilitate flights from multiple routes encouraging more international travellers for business, pleasure, education, sports, corporate or even social events. It will enhance more trade on local and international levels encouraging the growth of regional organizations and businesses that would play an important role in the process.
