ADNOC Initiates $5.5 Billion EPC Contract for Ruwais LNG Project

The plant is set to be the first LNG export facility in the Middle East and North Africa region.
ADNOC has granted NMDC Energy, Technip Energies, and JGC Corporation a $5.5 billion contract for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the lower-carbon Ruwais LNG project in Al Ruwais Industrial City, Abu Dhabi.

The project will have two natural gas liquefaction trains capable of producing 9.6 million tons of LNG annually. The plant will use electric-driven motors instead of traditional gas turbines and will be fuelled by clean energy.

The plant will be the first LNG export facility in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) area to use clean electricity, making it one of the world’s low-carbon LNG plants. The project will more than double ADNOC’s LNG production capacity, in line with global natural gas demand and the shift to decarbonization.

NMDC Energy CEO Ahmed Al Dhaheri stated, “We are proud to be entrusted by ADNOC with the Ruwais LNG project. This reinforces our position in the UAE’s energy landscape and demonstrates our commitment to supporting the country’s sustainable growth.” Using nuclear energy to produce LNG not only sets a new international standard for low-emission energy, but it also aligns with the UAE’s sustainable future strategy.

Technip Energies CEO, Arnaud Pieton, stated that the project’s use of nuclear energy to power electrified LNG trains sets a new standard in energy security and sustainability. By leveraging our low-carbon and electrified LNG expertise, we will strengthen ADNOC’s position as a dependable global natural gas provider and demonstrate our commitment to decarbonisation.
Farhan Mujib, President of JGC, stated, “We are committed to leveraging our capabilities and experience for the low-carbon Ruwais LNG project, bringing a proven track record in the LNG field.”
